Based on religious sources, God created the world for humankind, and the ultimate purpose of human creation is to attain nearness to God. Sometimes, due to excessive attention to worldly matters and material pleasures, humans neglect the primary purpose of their creation and become immersed in the material world and its fleeting pleasures. On the other hand, the Almighty God, who desires the good of His servants, has established various measures, principles, and laws for the universe to draw human attention to the purpose of creation and awaken them from negligence—among these are widespread calamities. Thus, the question addressed here is: What role do widespread calamities play in awakening humans from negligence? This article, employing an analytical-descriptive method and drawing upon Quranic, narrational, jurisprudential sources, as well as Quranic and hadith principles, answers this question. According to the verses and narrations, it appears that widespread calamities, by detaching humans from worldly attachments and reminding them of their weakness and incapacity in the face of events, can play a significant role in awakening humans from negligence and compelling them to understand and attend to the primary purpose of their creation.
